Generations of students have benefited from the well-rounded education at Gan Eng Seng School (GESS). Founded in 1885 by a philanthropist of the same name, this school is among the oldest in Singapore. Located on Henderson Road in the western end of Singapore, GESS consistently ranks in the nation’s top 50 schools.
The school originally opened in the Telok Ayer Street shophouses and moved to eight different locations during its history. Currently the GESS campus at No. 1 Henderson Road was designed by 11 architects, led by GESS alum Jimmy Lam (’83). The team incorporated the Dragon and the Ship, two symbols on the GESS crest. Red and green, also from the school crest, are the featured color scheme. Many other academic institutions such as Crescent Girls’ School and Henderson Secondary School are around in the area.
